The Chronicle Of Oldřich S Selected For SilverDocs 2012
The short documentary The Chronicle Of Oldřich S by Czech director Rudolph Šmíd will screen as part of the American documentary film festival SilverDocs.
The 18-minute short takes as its inspiration the diaries of Oldřich Sedlacek, which contain one-sentence entries spanning from 1981 to 2005 and chronicle the lives of himself and his family (“Today our Gypsy neighbour Gina broke my hand, I was taken to hospital in Mlada Boleslav”), his village and the surrounding area (“A man called Bartos, 32 years old, killed his wife, 30, today in Prisovice and threw her body into the pond”) and the world at large (“L I Brezhnev died today”).
Eighty such entries were selected from the thousands chronicled and used to craft an animated story of Sedlacek’s life and the world around him, painting a picture of the passage of time and the changes of society that inevitably come with it.
Despite only screening internationally since February 2012, The Chronicle Of Oldřich S has already picked up a great deal of recognition, being selected for the Trickfilm Festival (Stuttgart, Germany), the DOXA Festival (Vancouver, Canada), the SXSW Film Festival (Austin, Texas, USA), and the DocAviv Festival (Tel Aviv, Israel). In the upcoming months, the film will also be screened at the 52nd Krakow Film Festival (Poland) and the Huesca Film Festival (Spain).
Awards wise, it was nominated for the Silver Eye (best documentary) at the Jihlava Film Festival (Czech Republic), and received the Special Jury Award at the Docudays Festival (Kiev, Russia) and the Main Prize For Short Film at the IFAF AniFest (Czech Republic).
SilverDocs is an annual documentary film festival taking place in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA from 18th to 24th June 2012. It’s the largest of its kind in the United States, with an annual attendance of over 27,000 people and screenings of over two hundred documentaries from all over the world.
