Nostalgia For The Light Is Illuminated On DVD
New Wave Films have announced that Patricio Guzmán’s award winning documentary Nostalgia For The Light is to be released on DVD on 13th July 2012.
As a central point, Guzmán takes the Atacama Desert in the Andes Mountains of South America, a place so devoid of water it resembles the surface of Mars. Guzmán draws a parallel between the astronomers who take advantage of the perpetually unobscured sky to research humanity’s origins with the Chilean women who still search for the remains of their loved ones executed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
A selection of astronomers, archaeologists and engineers are interviewed alongside survivors of the Chacabuco concentration camp – which operated in the Atacama in 1973 and 1974 – and women who search the arid landscape in the faint hope of uncovering the bodies of those who did not make it out.
The connection of the two seemingly unrelated topics is drawn by the observation that both groups of people are looking to the past to affirm the present, and that while we all may live and die, the stardust we came from is part of an eternal cycle of rebirth, and that those we have lost will live forever in our memories.
Nostalgia For The Light was part of the Official Selection at the Film Festivals in San Francisco and Miami in 2011, and Melbourne, Toronto and Cannes in 2010. It also won Best Documentary at the 2010 European Film Awards, the 2011 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and the 2010 Abu Dhabi Film Festival.
