Mateo Gil’s Blackthorn Coming To DVD And Blu-ray
Chelsea Films have announced that they will be releasing the DVD and Blu-ray of Mateo Gil’s Bolivia-set western, Blackthorn (2011), on 4th June 2012.
Although perhaps better known for his screenwriting collaborations with fellow Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar, creating the such films as Open Your Eyes (1997), The Sea Inside (2004) and Agora (2009), Gil’s Blackthorn is an alternate chapter in the legend of infamous wild west outlaw Butch Casssidy. Said to have been killed in a stand-off, along with equally infamous partner-in-crime, the Sundance Kid, with the Bolivian military in 1908, Blackthorn sees Cassidy survive the confrontation.
Under the new name of James Blackthorn, Cassidy (played here by Sam Shepard), now an old man, lives out his final years in peaceful seclusion in a Bolivian village. Pining to see his family one last time before he dies, Cassidy/Blackthorn decides to head on back to the US. However, a chance encounter with a ambitious criminal named Eduardo (Eduardo Noriega) complicates his plans, leading him to partake in one last adventure involving a stash of stolen money totaling $50,000.
Winning four categories at this year’s Goya Awards (regarded as the Spanish equivalent to the US Academy Awards), Blackthorn has received much positive press, particularly for Shepard’s grizzled portrayal of Butch Cassidy. You can view the trailer for the film below:
