London Screening Of Jean Mihail’s Silent Masterpiece
The Barbican, London are screening Jean Mihail’s silent masterpiece Manasse (Romania, 1925) on 25th March 2012.
Manasse is set in a small town in Eastern Romania at the turn of the 20th century and features a tender love story between a Romanian man and a Jewish woman. Strikingly presenting the theme of religious intolerance throughout, the film is powerfully dramatic and visually remarkable.
The screening has live musical accompaniment by Minima. Minima’s music is an audacious 21st century interpretation of the images of silent and avant-garde film. Formed in 2006, Minima perform in cinemas and art centres, as well as music and film festivals and unusual venues, such as churches, markets and railway arches. Minima’s repertoire includes silent feature films: surrealism, horror and science fiction, as well as silent short films, animations and improvised performances.
