Irish Classic Shake Hands With The Devil Finally Gets A Home On DVD
Metrodome have announced that their DVD release date for the Irish/American co-production Shake Hands With The Devil (1959) will be 11th June 2012.
In 1921 Dublin, during the final stages of the Irish War of Independence, a medical student and secret IRA member is murdered. As a result, his apolitical classmate and First World War veteran, Kerry O’Shea (Don Murray), is thrown into the chaos of a world he thought he had left behind after his father died. Soon he becomes embroiled in a series of plots to overthrow the hated Black & Tans – ex-British soldiers sent to suppress the IRA’s activities – but as the possibility of peace mounts so do the group’s desperate, bloodthirsty measures. As the tension builds and the rebels begin to turn on each other, only death will bring the solution they need.
The film also stars James Cagney as a medical professor who secretly doubles as the head of the Irish Republican Army, as well as Dana Wynter, Sybil Thorndike, Michael Redgrave, Glynis Johns and Richard Harris in one of his earliest screen appearances.
Seen as an archetypal film in the depiction of the activities of the old IRA, Shake Hands With The Devil is often overlooked and, up until now, has been rare to find. This marks the first time it has ever been officially released on DVD.
