Aki Kaurismäki’s Le Harve Arrives On DVD And Blu-ray

Aki Kaurismäki’s comedy drama, Le Harve, is coming to DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Artificial Eye on 6th August 2012.

Le Havre sees Finland’s most celebrated filmmaker (Lenigrad Cowboys Go America (1989), The Man Without A Past (2002)) tackle the subject of Northern Europe’s attitude towards refugees from the developing world. The film tells the story of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a former author and a well-known Bohemian. He has retreated into voluntary exile in the port city of Le Havre, where he feels he has reached a closer rapport with the people by serving them in the occupation of the honourable, but not too profitable, shoe-shiner. Marcel has buried his dreams of a literary breakthrough and lives happily within the triangle of his favourite bar, his work, and his wife Arletty (Kati Outinen). However, fate suddenly throws in his path an underage immigrant refugee (Blondin Miguel) from the troubled African continent.

Le Harve won the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and is potentially the first of a new Kaurismäki film trilogy looking at life in port towns.
