A Separation Eyes Oscar Success

The Academy Awards has announced that nine films are currently vying for the Foreign Language Film award (sixty-three films had originally qualified in the category).

Asghar Farhadi's A Separation

Asghar Farhadi will be confident of A Separation's success at 84th Academy Awards.

The shortlist will be winnowed down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. They will spend three days, viewing three films each day, before then casting their ballots. The final nominees will be announced on 24th January 2012.

Given recent award success at the Golden Globes, as well as a nomination for a BAFTA in the Film Not In The English Language category, few would bet against A Separation (Iran) taking home the much coveted statue, but there will be stiff competition from the likes of Wim Wenders’ 3D dance documentary Pina. The full list of nominations (in alphabetical order) is as follows:

  • Bullhead (Belgium), directed by Michael R. Roskam;
  • Monsieur Lazhar (Canada), directed by Philippe Falardeau;
  • Superclásico (Denmark), directed by Ole Christian Madsen;
  • Pina (Germany), directed by Wim Wenders;
  • A Separation (Iran), directed by Asghar Farhadi;
  • Footnote (Israel), directed by Joseph Cedar;
  • Omar Killed Me (Morocco), directed by Roschdy Zem;
  • In Darkness (Poland), directed by Agnieszka Holland;
  • Warriors Of The Rainbow: Seediq Bale (Taiwan), directed by Wei Te-sheng.
