Bertrand Tavernier's most recent film is the period epic The Princess Of Montpensier.

Bertrand Tavernier is widely recognized as the leading French filmmaker of his generation. His career already spans four decades and includes more than two dozen feature-length films, including such internationally acclaimed titles as Un Dimanche à la campagne (A Sunday In The Country), La Fille de d’Artagnan, Autour de Minuit (Round Midnight) and Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate).

Lynn A. Higgins provides original, insightful analyses of each of Tavernier’s films to date. Her approach through genre allows her to account for both the diversity and the unity of Tavernier’s oeuvre. She shows how Tavernier bridges literature and film, fiction and documentary, French traditions and Hollywood genre cinema, mainstream audience appeal and modernist innovation, ethics and aesthetics, activism and art. She spotlights his preoccupation with France’s colonial past, with family dynamics and a critique of gender roles (especially heroic masculinity) with explorations into the powers of art and the responsibilities of the artist. Central to this study is its focus on intergenerational relations, both among fictional characters and within French cinema history.
